Argentina To Require Visas For Tourists?

The Argentine government plans to require Americans and citizens of 115 other nations to pay for a visa to visit the country, the local daily Ambito Financiero reported Monday. “President Cristina Fernandez plans to sign a decree in the coming days (to impose the new requirement),” Ambito said. “The policy will be applied to 116 countries that charge Argentines such a visa fee.”
The Argentine Post tried to confirm the new policy with a Tourism Secretariat spokesperson Tuesday and got the following reply. “There is something to this,” the spokesperson said, but declined to provide definitive confirmation.

[...] Important news for travelers – Argentina to pass law to charge tourists for visas starting in 2009! A great review of one of our favorite in expensive Malbecs! (Currently in inventory…) [...]
i think its fair.
Excellent! If some countries charge Argentines $100 for visiting their country, why not Argentine charge the same?
It is very fair.
It is still unclear weather US citizens will be required a visa prior to departure or will simply pay a fee upon arrival. There has been no response from the consulate in Washinton, DC. Any one have any info on this?
Totally fair.
Taos,
Happy Holidays!
Have you heard anything new about this fee o charge?
Is this pending Senate approval or something…what is the delay if there should be and when or there shouldn’t be.
Would love to know what the rules are, to be informed is a very good thing ya know
Cheers,
gracee
Hey Grace,
I hope to know more about this in a few days. The government issued a decree on this which gave the Foreign Ministry the power to oversee and decide how the visa fee would be applied and for how long, etc. The decree itself had no details about this, so I’ve been waiting for confirmation from the Foreign Ministry about how they will go about everything. As soon as I have confirmation, I’ll post an update.
Cheers,
Taos
That’s total BS. An easy way to get money for the gov’t budget and rip off tourists. That “revenge” concept is totally inadequate for a country of such proportions. That’s just taking advantage of tourists: “Oh, they’ll go there anyways so might as well charge them.” No respect!
I wouldnt mind paying for it if i knew it was actually going to go toward something other than a new swiss bank account for the kirchners…
