Argentines Feeling Good About Obama

Obama's Expectations

An overwhelming majority of Argentines feel good about having Barack Obama as president of the United States. Almost 76% of Argentines feel positively about the new president, according to a survey released Tuesday by the consulting firm Ibarómetro.

Less than 6% of those polled feel negatively about Obama while around 18% say they have neither positive nor negative expectations for him.

Meanwhile, Obama’s election has done wonders for America’s image here.

As I have written before, Argentina has recently been one of the most anti-American countries on the planet. But now almost 63% of Argentines say they are “willing to favorably change” their view of the U.S. Around 9% of those surveyed say Obama’s election could negatively affect their view of the U.S. while a similar percentage say the election won’t change their views. Just under 20% say they don’t know how to feel about America.

Whether it’s fair or not, Obama’s victory has caused a potentially tectonic shift in the way people in Argentina feel about the U.S. and its government. The reasons for this may be debatable, but the underlying reality of this shift is not.

Argentina was never “anti-American.” It was anti-Bush Administration policies.

While this article states that Argentine’s in general have a negative attitude towards the U.S. as an Argentine -American born in the U.S. I have been able to travel back and forth several times in the last 20 years and have found either extreme admiration for the U.S. or disgust. When I have found disgust usually I learn that it is because the individual relate problems within their country to our foreign policy rather than the deep set corruption of their politicians and the country’s declining morality. Many of the haters in fact have even left their beloved Argentina to the U.S. only to find out that in America you have to work hard and treat others fairly to have lasting success and that is how the “American dream” (Argentine’s are quite familiar with through their love of our movies and music) can become a reality.

In the begining I doubted about Obama…I wanted a more “traditional” white president.
I surely was predigist, or afraid and thinking that the rights will only be coming for black people, and pay back time was on his way.
Today I realize that I was wrong. Obama is universal.
His mind is universal.
His intelligence is part of the cosmic energy of this new era.
He looks spiritual enough to sense for all of the human race, to look for compassion What he really wants is world peace.
If we the humans let him…

Frank Rios, could you please explain further what you mean about the country’s “declining morality”? I’m trying to learn all I can about Argentina since I might be visiting later this year and I’m curious what this statement means. Thanks.

And anyone else who had an opinion on this, please comment.
