Embarrassing Video Catches Argentine Politician Lying

Former Buenos Aires Mayor Aníbal Ibarra is feeling like a pretty big idiot.

In a televised interview last night, film crews showed Ibarra walking the streets of Buenos Aires shaking hands with an unusual number of unusually admiring people. Each approached him with words of praise and affectionate gestures. All of this seemed a bit strange for the television crew, whose cameras caught Ibarra in the middle of an embarrassing lie.

As it turns out, Ibarra’s admirers weren’t really the simpleton citizens they appeared to be. Ibarra appears to have gotten them to follow him around the city during the interview and pose as his fans. But the stage trick, which undoubtedly is employed by politicians around the world, backfired, exposing Ibarra, who is running for Congress in next June’s election, as inauthentic and dishonest.

There’s nothing particularly nefarious about Ibarra’s behavior. In the world of political abuse, this fraudulent act seems like a minor transgression, a reckless PR gaffe. Stage tricks and other PR gimmicks are common for politicos in all countries, especially when they’re running for office.

But the video exposé could be particularly damaging for Ibarra, who has for years accused political opponents of inauthentic posturing. The video itself is devastating. Cameras from the news program Telenoche caught Ibarra lying on camera about the whole matter. In the middle of the interview, Ibarra stops and says he needs to make a call. He says he needs to give a radio interview with Radio America. But in reality, a visibly nervous Ibarra calls one of his collaborators to warn him that the actors are being too obvious.

“Get them out of here. It’s time already, because they (at Telenoche) are catching on,” Ibarra says, unaware that he’s being recorded. “Get them out!”

At one point, one of the fake admirers says, “Ibarra’s government was the best (¡Su gobierno fue lo más!). A Telenoche reporter, already skeptical about the actor’s authenticity, asks the actor what she liked most about Ibarra’s government. Incredibly, the woman responds by making a reference to Ibarra’s controversial removal from office.

Ibarra was mayor of Buenos Aires from 2000-2005. He was impeached after the December 2004  República Cromagnon nightclub fire killed almost 200 people and spurred a massive backlash against local politicians.

UPDATE: On his Facebook page, Ibarra says the “actors” were genuine fans who had, out of their own free volition, decided to follow him around in a bid to make him look good on camera. He didn’t hire or encourage them to do so, Ibarra says, adding that the actors were in reality people were political “militants” who had “been participating in our activities for a long time.”

Perhaps. But if that’s the case, there are a number of things that don’t add up. For example, when one of the women was asked whey she had said Ibarra’s administration had been “lo más,” why didn’t she give a reason why she actually thought so. Presumably, a political “militant” who had worked with Ibarra for years would be able to come up with a reason why she thought he was “lo más.” Perhaps she just got nervous on camera.

You be the judge.

There is a second part of this video where Anibal Ibarra says that his followers are to blame!! This is the same guy who said he didn’t know BA had a traffic problems (especially during rush hours) because he was used to wake up at midday.. When I see this kind of things I think that the politicians are not to blame for all the things we have to go through… the problem here is our society, our people, us.

The article is not accurate it says “hired”, there isn’t any proof of that, there wasn’t any money involved. Anyway is sad to see him lying, but at the same time he feels uncomfortable.is not usual to see a politician uncomfortable while lying. And look the video at one point he explains the reporter what is happening he is just giving the radio interview excuse for the video editing, for the camera, it makes sense. What happened is that clueless fan organized that without considering the negative effect, they tried to help in a stupid way. He didn’t like that and wanted to interrupt him. His PR people is completely stupid, but I think is not fair to blame him for lying when what he did was to stop the organized lie.

My guess is that he wouldn’t have felt so clearly uncomfortable if he hadn’t been involved in this in some way. He clearly was nervous and didn’t want to get caught. If he had been fully unaware of their plans, my guess is he would have felt flattered instead of so uncomfortable. He could easily have dismissed them as genuine but overzealous fans.

something else: the inverview was after a political act, full of ibarra fan, and they followed him from there “trying to help”. it makes a difference is not like they spread people in advance on the street. They started the interview after a meeting full of supporters.

Taos Turner says:

Hi Chotin and Ramiro,

Very good points.

I don’t have any evidence that he paid these actors to work for him. It’s quite possible that they volunteered or worked for free simply because they really do support Ibarra. It’s also true that Ibarra does have real fans, and there were some of them in the video. And it is at least a logical possibility that these people did this without Ibarra’s knowledge (though this option seems unlikely). I’ve edited the text to reflect your point, which is well taken and much appreciated. I should have noticed that previously myself. Thank you.

I think it’s unlikely that “clueless fans” organized this without Ibarra knowing about it. Like I said, this is a pretty minor offense in my book, though it clearly shows him to be inauthentic in a way that is cynical and depressing, in my view. It’s just one more reason why so many people don’t respect politicians.

It could be true that he began to feel uncomfortable about the incident because he wanted to be real and authentic and while in the middle of the act he realized how lame all of this was. I’m skeptical about this option, but it is a possibility.

In any case, if this is Ibarra’s worst offense, he’d be pretty clean compared with other politicians who have done a whole lot worse.

Cheers,
Taos
