Some of those hot bodies you see on Argentina’s streets may not be completely natural.
Long known for its unusually attractive population, Argentina has more plastic surgeries and non-surgical procedures than all but 12 countries in the world.
According to the survey, which measures total and not per capita plastic surgeries, Argentina ranks 13th worldwide in terms of surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. The U.S. leads the world in the rankings.
The top 20 rankings follow, in order from No. 1 to No. 20:
US, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Spain, Argentina, France, Hungary, Canada, Colombia, UK, Taiwan, Venezuela
Given Argentina’s comparatively small population (about 40 million), it’s astonishing that it ranks so high compared with Brazil (191 million), China (1.3 billion) and the U.S. (307 million).
If per capita rates were computed, Argentina’s ranking would be much higher.
Last year Argentines had 132,486 plastic surgeries, according to the survey.
The most popular surgery was the boob job, followed by liposuction, the eyelid lift, the facelift and, finally, the good old nose job. The least common procedure was cheek implants. Some 284 women had “vaginal rejuvenation” surgery, whatever that is.
The most common non surgical procedure involved injecting botox into the skin to make wrinkles disappear.
Argentina has an estimated 517 plastic surgeons, putting in 11th place worldwide. That’s more than France (464), Canada (425) and the U.K. (274).
Argentina’s most famous consumer of aesthetic procedures may be Argentine President Cristina Fernández. Though Fernández hasn’t spoken publicly about the matter, it appears to many people that she’s had work done on her lips.
Which kind of surgical procedures are most popular worldwide? The plastic surgery society had this to say:
“For the last ten years, the consensus has been that breast augmentation was the most popular plastic surgery procedure. The ISAPS Global Survey reveals a new trend with liposuction representing 18.8% of all surgical procedures, followed by breast augmentation at 17%, and blepharoplasty (upper or lower eyelid lift) at 13.5%, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) at 9.4% and abdominoplasty (“Tummy Tuck”) at 7.3%.”
The ISAPS website lists accredited surgical “facilities” around the world where various procedures can be performed. It has one listing for Argentina.
