This one’s for those of you who don’t live in or around the City of Buenos Aires.

Less than 24 hours after former president Néstor Kichner died Wednesday, the government’s media machine started placing propaganda posters all over the City of Buenos Aires and nearby suburbs, indicating that, even as the president herself was still mourning the death of her husband, her political machinery was already back at work.

when i was out walking the streets of palermo and microcentro shortly after 6am yesterday the posters were already all up and well on their way to being dry. imagine the productivity possible in this country if efforts were re-directed to things that actually matter.

AC….HOW TRUE!!! I spent that afternoon in Caballito. It is probably the most densely populated barrio in CABA. The censor taker commented to my friend that her area supervisor was told that the canvassing was to be completed by 2.00pm. Those not answering their doorbells would be marked as “absent”. I got there at 3.00pm. Locals reported that most censors were already gone. How unproductive for businesses to be prohibited from re-opening their doors until 8.00pm. By 6.00pm, cafes and restaurants began service to eager customers. Most cafes on the main avenue, Av. Rivadavia, had no space available in their sidewalk tables. It appeared to me that the death of NK to them was not a detracting factor to the enjoyment of a sunny afternoon.

Since 26 July 1952 peronist (party/movement/religion) needs its cyclical martyrs. The mystic was renewed in 1974 and now in 2010, just on time, when the figure of Domingo and Eva were naturally fading away. I wouldn’t be surprised of a shift in the liturgy. I just hope that Nestor is not declared Eternal President like Kim il-Sung.

By the way, looking for material I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpxO9iG2afA, it is was the Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

I was curious when I saw these posters everywhere, who paid for them. Advertising isnt cheap. Can a hardcore journalist such as yourself ask such a question? In the US, you could find out. Here? Were these paid for by taxpayer pesos? I understand such advertising is another way they skim money back into their pockets, which is why you will see the same poster right next to the same poster.

Reminds me of the huge posters of dictators all over the middle east saying how much the people “loved them”…
